Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Players will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
